Adding Front & Back Material in a Kindle Book

Adding Front & Back Material in a Kindle Book

One of the formatting tasks you have when it comes to self-publishing with Kindle is adding front and back matter to your book. These are specific things that you want to include in your book that will help you with promotion, protecting your original material and more. We will take a look at exactly what you need to have in your front and back material and why and how you can make things easier for yourself when it comes to making a success in the world of self-publishing.

The Title Page

One of your front matter (or front material) items is going to be your title page. The title page of your book might be skipped when someone goes to read your book, due to the nature of Amazon starting readers on the very first chapter, but it is still an important part of your book that should be present. The title page should contain the title of your book, your author Dave and any information on a publisher if you have one.

The Copyright Page

Having a copyright page is important even if you are not publishing traditionally or on paperback. However, copyright pages can be difficult when it comes to Kindle publishing because they tend to lose their formatting and take up several pages. The best idea is to understand where a Kindle page ends so the you know where to put your page breaks, and make your copyright pages shortest possible. If you don’t know how to create a copyright page, there are lots of guides online that will help you. If you need help adding copyright pages, contact IT Support New York.

The Invitation to Review

Your first back matter page should be an invitation to review your book. When someone finishes your book, if they liked it there is a small chance that they will review it positively. People simply do not review things that they liked as much as they review things that they didn’t. That’s why it is a good idea to add a reminder and a link directly to the review page to allow someone to post a review. Amazon might remind them on their own, but it is still a good idea to have this page is the first page of your back matter.

The Mailing List

You definitely want to start building a mailing list for your self-publishing. Having a mailing list can mean that you get book sales when you publish and let everyone on the list know by sending out an alert email whenever you publish or once a month no matter what.

The Promotional Material

Posting cover images and synopses of your other books, especially if the book is one in a series, is going to be another part of your back matter that you want to include. You should list the next book in the series, the first book in the series if this book is not the first, and a few other books so that you have six total.
